When the temperature drops and the snow starts to fall don't be afraid to keep exploring the outdoors. With the right equipment winter becomes a wonderfully active season. By keeping you on top of thick layers of snow, snowshoes should be considered for anyone attempting to log reasonable distances.
Snowshoes work by distributing weight over an area larger than your boot would permit. The frame of a snowshoe defines its size, while the decking material provides a surface to push against the snow. This act of distribution is called flotation. A ratio of weight to surface area equals the amount of flotation snowshoes provide.
Recreational snowshoes are designed to provide adequate floatation and traction for flat or slightly rolling terrain. These are suitable for trail hiking in non-mountainous or hardpack conditions. Recreational shoes are lightweight, often made from molded plastic, and come with a toe and heel crampon. These snowshoes won't perform well when traversing slopes, but are otherwise a great way to stay on top of deep snows.
