A stroll up Hi-View Nature Trail is a must-do for anyone staying at Black Rock Campground. The trail is accessed either by a short drive down a road to the west or directly from the western part of the campground (near site #21). A 1.3 mile loop climbs at a steady pace to gain 360 feet of elevation with great views of the campground and surrounding area.

Hike the trail in a clockwise direction for a more gentle descent. Stairs and other markers make this trail very easy to follow and suitable for all ages.

As you climb, pay attention to the desert flora at your feet. During the spring bloom this area is covered in flowers.

Top out on the ridge after 0.6 miles. From here, you’ll have a commanding view of Black Rock Canyon. Feel free to register your hike in the box located at the top of the ridge.

Complete the loop by winding down a gentle canyon to the west with views north towards Yucca Valley, crossing the West Side Loop Trail at mile 1.2. You might notice interpretive trail markers dotting the route. Currently, the park is working on updating their brochure for this hike. Check in at the visitors center before you start to see if the new version is out yet.

    Directions

  • Black Rock campground is located in the northwest corner of the park, south of Yucca Valley. From Highway 62 in Yucca Valley continue east, then turn right onto Avalon Ave (just as you start leaving town). Continue straight for 2.9 miles as the road changes its name to Palomar Ave. Turn left onto Joshua Ln and continue another 0.9 miles. Turn right onto Black Rock Canyon Rd, curve around the left hand bend, and then navigate the potholes for another 0.7 miles into the campground.
