Keys View offers a spectacular spot to watch the sunset after a long day exploring the desert. Enjoy the lookout straight from the parking lot, or walk up a paved 0.2 mile loop which provides even better views. From this vantage point you can see the Salton Sea, which sits 230 feet below sea level; 10,800 foot tall San Jacinto Peak, behind Palm Springs; 11,500 foot tall San Gorgonio Mountain, the highest peak in southern California; and the San Andreas Fault as it runs through the Coachella Valley.
Depending on how recently it has rained you might even glimpse Signal Mountain all the way across the border in Mexico. Smog from the Los Angeles basin flows through the pass between San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, many days clogging the Coachella Valley. But even if that's the case, you can still catch magnificently colorful sunsets and, if you're lucky, some bighorn sheep from Key View.
