Before Joshua Tree was a national park numerous families attempted to use the land for livestock, mining, and homesteading. Very few were up to the challenges of thriving in such a harsh desert environment, but William Keys and his family were one of them. This 90 minute tour is available on Fridays and Saturdays at 2:00pm, and on Sundays at 10:00am. The tour costs $5 per person, and tickets can be purchased the previous day at either the Joshua Tree or Oasis visitor centers. These tours tend to fill up so advanced reservations are recommended; call (760) 367-5522 to secure your tickets.
While much of the grounds are in a state of disarray, the ranch house, schoolhouse, store, and workshop are still standing. Your guide will walk you through what life looked like living in the Mojave Desert over 100 years ago. Make sure to bring lots of sun protection, water, and arrive at the gate at least 15 minutes early.
